Title: Fishies need I2 too....
Post by: ChemicalSolution on April 05, 2002, 11:16:00 PM
SWIM had a dream that she walked into a pet shoppe and found a rather dense feeling 8oz bottle of liquid --"iodine nutrient" for her itty, bitty fishes.  The bottle contains I2 and KI along with purified water and (she forgets, but probably) etOH.. It was around $6..  Last time she checked, this was cheaper than tincture..

SWIM doesn't need I2, so she didn't bother to buy it.. But this may be something...

Title: For Reefs
Post by: Elementary on April 06, 2002, 12:18:00 AM
I've seen it being sold for reefs.

Abstract from web site :

Iodine occurs in nature at about 60ppb this includes all forms such as iodide, iodate. Iodine is essential for the growth of both hard and soft corals, macro and micro algae as well as coralline algae. Iodine is rapidly removed by the protein skimming and the use of activated carbon.

Therefore it must be replenished weekly to ensure levels are maintained at the optimum level.

Other products seem to advertise it as a concentrated solution of iodide

Title: Saw some today
Post by: Elementary on April 13, 2002, 08:48:00 PM
I saw this stuff in an fishy shop today, it was a clear liquid (just KI and H2O maybe !). They wanted about £5 for a 150 mL plastic bottle.

Then I looked around an 'outdoors shop' and found some 12% Tincture, £4.50 for a 25 mL bottle.

Until I actually get more info on the amount of KI in the fishy stuff I will stick with the old tincture !

I could not inspect the fishy Iodine closer as it was behind the counter.
