These small hand-operated hydraulic bench-top presses are routinely used to make transparent discs, or tablets if you will, of KBr and a small sample of some substance. The disc is then put to a IR spectrometer which will spit out the IR spectrum for the substance. They are standard laboratory equipment, really.
