Title: How do you use magnetic stirring?
Post by: hologram on March 27, 2004, 11:15:00 PM
How does magnetic stirring work?

Can you use any flask and put it on the magnetic stirrer or must it be a certain type?

What happens if in your reaction solids form, is magnetic stirring ok for those too?

Any glass flask can be used.

Yes, unless the solids make the solution really thick. How thick the solution can be depends on how strong the magnet in your stirrer is.

But it must be teamed with the right sized stirrer bar.

Also beware that the stirrer bars can develop little nicks which can etch nasty scratches in your glassware over time.
