Iodine evaporation
« on: December 04, 2003, 02:03:00 AM »
Yesterday SWIM tried to do an I2 extraction from 100 ml of 2% tincture. Seemed to work fine, got som gray mush in the coffefilter after filtration, and left it to dry on the coffefilter (probably shouldnt have left it on the filter!).
When SWIM woke up this morning the entire coffefilter was black and the I2 was gone (prolly int hte coffefilter).

I understand i shouldt have left it to dry on the filter now, but what is the proper way to dry it?

Thanks! :)

Get some cup cake papers..

Get some cup cake papers.. 3 or 4 stacked, place into lunch box. Add a couple more as separate entity and put CaCl in it, now seal up lunch box and forget for few days. You will find that your lunch box is no longer any good for anything else as some I2 will sublime. Place lunch container into dark cool dry place.

So what i need is basicly a drying agent?
Can i use epson salt instead?
(Dried i oven @ 300c for two hours)

Is it a setup like this you mean?

I2-->                <----- Dryingagent
____|_________|_______
|     |              |         |  <--- Luch box
|     |              |         |
|  | \/   |      | \/   |     |
|_|____|____|____|___|

I didnt understand the cupcake paper part..
The i2 totally consumed the filterpaper, will it not eat the cupcake paper as well?
Isnt it better to use a plastic container?

Iodine should be dried on the spot really, you
« Reply #3 on: December 04, 2003, 06:41:00 AM »
Iodine should be dried on the spot really, you should wrap it in a shitload of coffee filters or paper filters and wring it out and step on it, apply alot of pressure and the paper will do the rest. This is a waste of filter paper though so it's better to use newspaper,  just wrap it in a coffee filter and then a few layers of newspaper and step on it, blah blah blah, etc etc.

Without details on how you extracted the I2, how long you allowed for crystal formation, how much you rinsed the crystals, how much acid you used, how much peroxide, and what you did to dry the crystals of excess water at the start, it is impossible to identify why you had "mush" rather than crystals, and we can only speculate why your mush merged into black goop in the filter paper.  For all we know, you may have extracted with bleach and not rinsed at all.

We can guess what your problem is, or you can give us a little help by describing what you did.

Or we could call Ms. Chleo, or I bet Osmium wouldn't mind handling this one! ;D  ;)  :-[

Air

Were the crystals placed in the filter and left to air dry?Exposure to air overnight would also explain the mush, regardless of the extraction method used.

Run over it

The last time drying I2 was discussed (last week?) somebody suggested putting it in a stack of coffee filters and running over it with your truck. I actually tried it and it worked great. The only problem is when I went to use it, it was like a rock! I had to use a hammer to break the damm thing up. Still did the job though.

After you filtered your solution into the coffee filter the gray mush were your i2 crystals you then should have rinsed them well. Then you should have wrapped them in about 20 filters or so.Then wrap some newspaper around that and get to stompin man. Then take them out of the filter and store em in a dry air tight container and add some drying agents if you like. Also like Geez(Da man)said bee more descriptive in the future as it eliminates the guess work.

nosefirst is correct. swims been driving over it for a long time, with great results. So what if it is clumped up. At least its dry, without a bunch of drama.

Details...
« Reply #10 on: December 05, 2003, 06:11:00 AM »
Sorry about that...

Here are the details:

1) 100ml  2% I2 Tincture  (2.5% I, 2.5% KI in etOH + H2O)
2) 25ml    Muriatic acid  (34.4% HCl)
3) 47,5ml  Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution of H2O2)
4) 175ml  Distilled H2O

In a 1 liter plasticcontainer i mixed 100 ml 2% tincture
with 25 ml of HCl, stirred and allowed to sit for 15 min.

Added 47,5ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide sollution, stirred
and let sit an additional 15 min.
Added 175 ml distilled H2O shook, and let it sit for  15 min more.

Decanted the top layer, (it wasnt so orange as i've read it should be but still... i repeated the shaking and waiting  part quite a few times just to be sure)

Washed like this three times, then filtered...

And then i left it to dry on the filter paper.
Big mistake, as the paper turend black and the crystals turned anywhere but up... :P

Thanks for your answers!  :)

okay...

Okay, IMHO you used far too much acid. Five or six ml should have been enough. The main problem is you didn't give it enough time. Slow down and let the process work. Give it overnight and you will be rewarded. Third, you did absolutely too little washing and rinsing of the crystals. Leave the crystals in the jug and fill it half full with water, swirl, decant the water through a fine cloth that will catch the I2 that floats, and do it again and again. It usually takes me at least five such rinses to feel like the HCl is clean. Yours had too much acid in the moisture in it and you didn't give it time to finsih making crystals. The ratios are fine, except for the acid. But be patient. Go do someting else, and come back later. Let the crystals grow. You will like the results.

See.. the details got answers, right?  :)

Sorry for delay,
Yes your cool ascii pictures reminds me of my lunch box, the little (well largest of the) paper cup cake trays worked fine. I found that vaccuum filtering took the bulk of the water and infact I only bothered to rinse whilst filtering. I never did try coffee filters.
