Title: Benzoyl Peroxide, a clandestine view
Post by: Elementary on May 29, 2002, 02:21:00 AM
My theory is that most chemicals with a single arm coming from a benzene ring have got to be able to be used or converted into something helpfull to the clandestine chemist.

Ummmm........Benzoyl Peroxide..........easily available  :)

I read couple of threads about possibly turning this into something more exciting, but none of them where conclusive.

Can anybees give me some input ?

Yes, but then again it would be easier just to bubble chlorine into toluene in sunlight (UV) to obtain benzyl chloride.

Swim would like to experiement with reducing the stuff but swim is cautious because Merck states it as explosive on heating

Hopefully your questions are purely theoretical. You shouldn't be messing with pure benzoyl peroxide unless you are aware of the dangers of organic peroxides.

Anyway, there is nothing interesting to be made with benzoyl peroxide.

"Peroxide-Catalyzed Chlorination of Toluene"

Sulfuryl chloride is needed in the above synth to produce benzyl chloride. How common is sulfuryl chloride? Isn't that watched?

Title: TCICA and others
Post by: psychokitty on May 29, 2002, 07:59:00 PM
TCICA and others like the chloro and bromo dimethylhydantoins are probably easier to obtain and to handle and should work equally fine in chlorinating a methyl benzene into a chloro benzene.  The literature seems to imply though that this reaction does not take place in absence of a peroxide.  The concentration of benzoyl peroxide in acne medications probably is not worth the trouble of isolating it from such OTC sources.  Does anybee know if it is available OTC in larger quantities?

...is available as a "hardener" for those synthetic resin fillers made from acrylates or methacrylates. It comes in the form of a paste or powder (preferred  ;)  ),mixed with desensitizers (don't know which chemical acts as a desensitizer and I'm too lazy now to look it up) and some other stuff perhaps.
It's easy to find in a hobby or hardware shop, I'm looking at a plastic bottle of that stuff right now... :P

It is normally sold mixed with water.

The lab grade form, yes, contains about 20% water as a desensitizer. But not the OTC variant from the hobby shop, it's perfectly dry, prilled stuff...must be something different in it!

It's a shame advantage can't be taken of those free radicals upon its decomposition.

Cheese: Maybe it's just me, because right now Im extremely tired and my mind is dull; but was that a joke? Elementary is a really smart man, not any boy.

If it was a joke, sorry again, Im just kinda slow right now, just trying to get my last Hive Fix before I crash in bed for the day.

I'm pretty sure that cheese was just joking. I'm in my mid-twenties and I still get zits sometimes from staying-up late and being stressed-out. :P

Cheese NEVER jokes about that, cheese takes pimples/warts/korns/blemishes very seriously. The day cheese STOPS getting pimples is the day cheese starts eating right and bathing once every so often. Can you say "little pimply faced kid who happens to be in his 30's"? SPLAT!!!#@%&*$%#@!+_)*%*&$ Hope you rested well Primo one.
