But can I use freon instead?  It would just be much simpler, though I have no evidence to back up this plan.  Any thoughts?

Sure.. You CAN use freon, butin the long run you won't be seeing any butterflies... or ozonelayer for that matter.. I really dunno from which 3rd world country you're from, but your proposition is definately not the smartest one.. not even near it.
