How come my seemingly clear/white MeNH2 turns...
« on: April 17, 2003, 05:14:00 AM »
How come my seemingly clear/white MeNH2 turns my Butanol yellow even after 2 recrystallisations? What is this stuff? I used a mantle to get it up to boiling.

When I heated a sample of the same 2x recrystallised MeNH2 with Butanol at between 90-100° as per Organic synthesis, there was no colour at all. So why does it turn yellow at higher temps?

Thanks,
FF

Simple thermal decomposition when you heat the solution to a higher temperature than specified in the instructions?

OK. That means I should be using an oil bath instead of the mantle to boil the butanol. Hope the rest of my MeNH2 is still ok.

Thanks,
