Ketone Goo! (Bisulfite Complex)
« on: April 18, 2003, 06:37:00 AM »
Hello bees,

Swim put his 'failed' ketone test in the freezer as advised by the hive. Whala! Now swim has found a third layer, which resembles cold chicken fat! That's the bisulfite complex, right? Oh, swim really hopes that this is a positive for ketone, since this will be swim's first successful large scale batch.

Now comes the cleanup. Does anyone have recommendations for cleaning up this goo? Eleuses says that the ketone will be released once the stuff is treated with a NaOH; then its just a matter of seperation, and distillation! Has anyone done this? Should I clean the goo up with something first (i.e. alcohol or DCM)?

Thanks!

shake some more and refrigerate some more until the goo solidifies as much as it can (btw - shaking IS better than stirring here, don't ask why) as more ketone reacts it should become less gooey.

if you distill you ketone 1st then do your test you will get beautiful white fluffy crystals, that you haven't means there is still alot of crap in the crystal matrix.

best thing is too distill your ketone now that you know you have some.
