Title: A good hot plate/stirrer size?
Post by: Mercury on December 02, 2003, 02:23:00 AM
SWIM has been looking around at hot plate/stirrers, but she's not sure of the exact size to purchase. The Corning PC-420 model has a 5x7 plate, but it seems too small. Other models have 10x10 plates, but they are waaaay too expensive and might be overkill. What's a good size that would sufficient for lab use?

FOR ONE:

this depends on several factors, what is it that you are interested in trying to do; also what size flasks are you to use in the experimental procedures. Once you can answer those questions for your SELF then, it is my guess that u will be able to provide your SELF with the adequate info for what size stir/heat it is that you require...

My guess is that you want a standard size, as even if you wish to heat bigger flasks,' then the bottom base plate it really does not matter as you will most likly use an oil bath to provide stable heating, and a better distribution of heat'

For example any of these will be suffice: as you can see they vary in size'

In the end it all depends on what it is that you are trying to do' might i suggest that you work out the size of you flasks that, which you are going to use and then work out what size apparatus it is that you require.. As most heat/stir tell you how many litres they can heat.

all the best' If this does not help then FUCK knows'

Title: Sorry about that. I should have explained...

Sorry about that. I should have explained more. To heat a 1 liter flask in an oil bath, then I am thinking that the hot plate/stirrer pictured below (far right) might be too small, but would it still heat up an oil bath? (might take longer!)

ALL of those in the pic will heat and stir the desired substance, if it is a 1lts flask" then i would go with the middle one, as this alows you to heat bigger flasks if that is the desired outcome later on' but, also it will heat/stir the flask that you may want to use'.

All of them will heat-up within reason as long as you are not trying to heat a 44gallon drum on the little one, What you are after is the standard size though this may vary through the course of opinions. So work out EXACTLY what flasks it is that you are too use, BUT always thinking ahead for later, and then buying the desired heat/stirrer.

ALL the best

Go with the corning PC-420 5x7.  IMHO it is an excellent hotplate/stirrer for general lab use; 100ml-2L flasks.  It has excellent stirring power/magnet coupling, precisely heats an oilbath for flasks up to 2L (not too slow/too fast)..and if you look hard enough can be had used for around $50.  The little 4x4 thing in the picture is for microchemistry (samples less than 15ml) and is useless for the applications you present.  The 10x10 size one you might want to work up to.... for 4L ++ flasks.  It heats very rapidly and may scorch or cause a runaway for smaller reactions.
