Title: A/B Mescaline Extraction - Xylene Alternative?
Post by: Aphexx on October 15, 2003, 04:25:00 AM
SWIM has been using xylene to perform a successful defatting of cactus material, however is now finding difficulty in obtaining more xylene for the basification step. I have read procedures that involve DCM and methanol, but is there a common solvent with the same properties as xylene that would be effective as a replacement for the basification step that SWIM still needs to perform? Thanks  :)

I think that DCM is more efficient for defatting process, as it is a somewhat more agressive than xylene for instance. As solvent for the A/B extraction toluene or ethylacetate is probably two good alternatives. DCM will give you a less pure extraction, as it pull's almost everything non-polar over in the organic phase, but it works  :) . Methanol is not useable here, as it is miscible with both water and almost whatever you throw at it(except the pure carbon solvents like heptane, hexane etc).
