Coke cans as AL source
« on: August 22, 2002, 08:02:00 PM »
On a 1-10 scale, how good of source is this for a Al/hg?

Has anyone ever measured the thickness of the al for the cans?

What is that tool called provides measurements for such things?

If you needed say, 27 grams of THIN al, how would you accuratley go about finding out how much THICK al you would need without using that tool?

That would probably be OK but one must scrape the colour off the can before using it in Al/Hg red. ami.

I dont see how that would be a problem. Fly's, beetles, and ant's don't seem to fuck up the rxn, so I doubt that will, but I could be wrong..

The pop tab is supposedly the purest Aluminum. Thats why some non-profits collect the tabs as a fundraiser.

pop tabs are the pull up part of the can.

pop tabs are the pull up part of the can. If you keep pulling the tab back and forth, it will snap off.

I bet an acid bath would clean off that paint from the can. Maybe a solvent even.

Just drive by your local non-ferrous metal dealer and buy a big sheet of the thinnest Al he has. It's cheap. 0.25mm thickness works great.
Scraping off the paint of soda cans sounds like a pretty stupid way to spend an afternoon.

I'm not fat just horizontally disproportionate.

Os, do you mean .025?

Just got back from the hardware store (was there for lightbulbs) and out of curiosity, I checked out the sheet metal section. They had 6" - 18" (.025) for like 4 bucks each. I would think they made an error labeling each one, it's deffinelty not

[edit] actually, it's probably a 1/4 of a mm

Thnx! Was just curious.

« Reply #16 on: August 23, 2002, 01:42:00 AM »
Al oven liners are perfect for 2 reasons.

1) they are flat rectangles, easier to cut up than dishes or pans
2) they are about 0.13mm (0.005"), a nice compromise between thick flashing (takes FOR-EVE-ER) and thin foil (look out, she's gonna blow).

for-ev-errr as in 24 hours or so? Thats not to bad considering you can pretty much up and leave and return 24 hours later.

How much Hg would one use per 100g of (.25mm) sheet al?
