Glacial acetic acid

Swim has been out of the mix for awhile and was curious about GAA. Read somewhere that it's watched pretty good now? Is this a don't order item or is it still cool to order?

Swim ordered a ltr 12 months ago without problems.

I think it is anhydrous AA that is one of the big chems for making heroin.

I walked in to the photography store, asked if they sold photo chems which, of course they did. Asked for GAA, which they had to order from the warehouse but would have next week. No phone #, no i.d., no problem. I just had to stress that I didn't want the dilute stuff they had behind the counter. One U.S. gallon for $25.00.

I read once about a technique of purifying acetic was dripping cold dilute on a seed crystal, forming a "glacier" ... Does anybody have a way of getting a seed crystal from 5%?  40%?

Kp 118°C F 16°C nD 1,3720 D 1,05
mixable with water
impurities: Acetaldehyd
Purifikation and Drying :
for most applications it is enough to crystallize the Acetic Acid. Cool down to 3-4°C. Filter trough ice cold büchner funnel and collect the cristals. Further purification by refluxing with 2-5% potassiumpermanganat and additional destillation. Perhaps shaking with phospourous(V)oxid to dry and again destillation.
Danger: Air-Acid mix 4% explosive. Prevent contact with skin.
First Aid: Wash with Water.

Perhaps shaking with phospourous(V)oxid to dry and again destillation.

This not only dries the GAA, it also dehydrates it to acetic anhydride, so it's a little too harsh way to dry GAA.

Hey, I live in Oz,

And it just cannot be bought anywhere,
I am sure that if you look hard enough over here, you will find that it just doesn't exist-smile
I import it, in wine bottles from India,.

abolt, hellman.

Please, surely you must have realised I was referring to our beautiful flora. I've never planned on ever buying sassafras oil.

I know places where much exists, I have always known.

Perhaps.. but i dont think this would be written as a purification step if the anhydrid will form. On the other hand it would be nice for those serching a way to prepare AceticAnhydrid. And why the hell one should destill after shaking with phosphour(V)oxid ?
And another problem : why spend so expensive chemicals just to dry acetic acid.
