chilling toluene/MDMA for best results
« on: June 06, 2003, 07:07:00 AM »
When one is nearly finished with the standard MM Al/Hg and the goods are in the toluene which has been dried, is it better to chill the solution before starting to gas, or after crystals have already formed from gassing at room temperature?

Crystals can form in toluene at room temperature, but the results will be better when the solution is cold.  I have read about 'seed' crystals, but don't know very much.  So might it be advantageous to only perform part of the gassing one normally might and then chill the toluene solution?

Thanks

They will probably oil out anyway if even A/B...

They will probably oil out anyway if even A/B is skipped.

seed crystal

Seed crystals means, when you have a solution with dissolved products within it and you want to help it crystallize.  You scratch a lil on the side of the beaker which releases tiny glass grains where other crystals start to form around it.

I suck at explaining.
agh.  I tried.

thats called scratching. using a seed crystal to help recystalize is where you chuck in a sample crystal of the pure goods to bully all the rest of those motherfuckers to jump outta solution.

Gas, filter and then gas the toluene again...

Gas, filter and then gas the toluene again repeat until no more crystals form. SWIM never noticed any difference when using cold toluene vs room temp toluene. (Personally with SWIM's luck, SWIM would do something stupid and put it in the freeser which would probably cause some condensation to form and force the remaining to oil out during the second round of gassing. By the time you A/B and dry you will lose what you would have gained.) SWIM tried both, using cold water and cold Toluene during the A/B (SWIM doesn't like gassing in DCM) and didn't notice an increase in yeilds.

Why do you dislike gassing DCM?
Personal preference or something...more sinister!  :)

MDMA.HCL is somewhat soluble in DCM, so you will loses some of your product in the DCM. It’s been mentioned many times in TFSE. If your worried about higher yields due to temp, this will kill all your efforts.

whatabout hexane? MeCN? diethyl ether? dcm is slightly polar... perhaps that is why the charged MDMA is held in a little by it and not by methylbenzene. theoretically the hydrochloride salt would be insoluble in hexane but have any beez had poor results using MeCN or ether as a gassing medium?
