Calcium salt of nitropropene

here is the conundrum, there is a bottle of IPA with CaO in it as a drying agent. The CaO refuses to settle completely. I have a sneaking suspision that were a nitropropene placed in that IPA that it would form the calcium salt of the nitro, possibly fucking up the rxn is actually intended for (NaBH4 reduction to the ethane.

right or wrong?

That is possible. Distill your solvent before using it in the reaction.
