Hey majic22,

All the parameters you're asking about, and probably a great many you're wondering about are treated with care and detail in Vogel's Practical Organic Chemistry. The whole distillation section is well worth curling up and getting intimate with, as it discusses the different aspects of each type of distillation in detail.

You're going to love it. Just skip to the Theory of Distillatioin section, then read the practical experiment section. It'll provide you with a whole heap of useful ideas and suggestions.
