Is this an acceptable way of measuring the reaction temperature? Will the thermomether show higher temp? About how much higher?

1. use full-immersion thermometer for accuracy.
2. DON'T LET THAT THERMOMETER TOUCH THE FLASK BOTTOM!
3. boil some water and see what it reads. (leave the balloon off), then you can correct
I recommend you use a little piece of wire inside the balloon to hang the thermometer so it doesn't touch the flask bottom.
Dropping that thermometer onto an usupported flask bottom (like one in an oil bath) can break the flask, by the way. I know from experience. Do use wire. You should consider getting a Claisen adapter.
if it is mercury it will ruin your reatants, also the prob os condensation might block you from reading the thing.
Does anyone know about the glass's effect on IR?
Could one rig up a IR temp gun aimed at the contents from outside the unit?

would it not be easier to use a 2 hole rubber stopper than to risk your flask, thermomitor and condenser? or better yet as geez suggests, get a claisen adaptor
