Just to confirm, a bisulfite test failure would be a lack of any crystal formation correct?
Does safrole react with sodium bisulfate in ANY way? If a person were to get white crystals there can be only one answer? - That it is ketone?
Thanks for the help in advance!
If you didn't get any crystals, then that would be a failure. It takes awhile for the crystals to form and you must shake hard. There was a thread about this about a week or so ago. Safrole will not react with bisulfite. Bisulfite reacts with ketones.
Also, take a look at

(Barium: "PTC for bisulfite-adducts", Methods Discourse)Perhaps you could post some results on that method?
runne - correct, correct , but they should float or be in suspension, crystals that sink immediately to bottom is XS bisulfite- refrigeration will also help crystalization
fierceness - Barium's rxn is overkill for what this guy is doing, water bisulfite and ketone is all you need, WADR
