Title: Elemicin
Post by: LiquidGaia on February 10, 2003, 08:26:00 AM
I have looked over several of the previous posts on elemicin, some say that elemi oil has an elemicin content of about 20% while others report it at around 2%. Does anyone know about any oil that has elemicin and their pecentages?  Or the oil which is cheapest and has the most elemicin.

thx.
(I'm trying for the elemicin--iso--->3,4,5tmba)

Asarum heterotropoides(one of two forms of the chinese herbal remedy Xixin) has about 3-4% elemicin in its essential oil, with the added bonus of ~12% safrole.

The cheapest way to 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde (using not too suspicious chems) would go via the Br-ation of vanillin (ca 12-14$/kg).

yea I know, i'm trying to avoid using methylating agents, also bromine is not nice (although the bromination via oxone in MeOH could be used) Aquiring the methylating agents is hard to do, and distilling Me2SO2 is not something I want to mess with.
