Title: Dominate Assurance Contract for Hosting The Vespiary.
Post by: Vesp on September 29, 2014, 09:42:34 PM
Hosting costs the Vespiary $25 per month.
It's not much, but I don't particularly like paying it since I have a lot of other expenses building up with my other projects and I see this site as a public good instead of a entraprenerial effort; I certainly don't make  any money from hosting this site.

We currently have 0.232 bitcoins for hosting, but I think I've came up with a good way to ensure continued donations as it runs out in the next 3 to 4 months (depending on what bitcoin does), which is to employ a dominate assurance contract, which will basically go like this:

At least 5 people need to donate $5 to The Vespiary to ensure it stays live per month (when current funds run out)

If less than 5 people donate less than $5, I will refund them & pay an additional $2.50 for their efforts. This means you get back $7.50.

> if it doesn't reach it's funding goals, you profit but the site goes down.

> if it does reach its funding goals, the site stays up and the money goes towards hosting, but you can opt to get your name green, and a site tag-line to signify that you donated and helped to support the site.  Example of this is user Tsjanga - which you may be able to see his green name and "Donated!" when they are online.  Also I will give your account profile 5/5 stars, which is generally reserved for users who post several hundred posts. I know it's arbitrary, but some people may enjoy the extra account bling.

For funders it is a win-win since they either get the public good (The Vespiary) or financial gain.

Do you think this idea is viable for future funding?
It seems like a fun experiment and I think I'll be trying it.

To ensure anonymity and simplicity I'd simply send the $7.50 to the same addresses that sent the $5... so if this is done it would be important to ensure you have the private key of the donating bitcoin address.

One draw back is that you'd have to trust me to give you the $7.50 or continue to host the site; but I've hosted the site since the end of 2008 which hopefully builds enough trust amongst strangers who like this site to risk $5. Eventually it'd be fun to use Mike Hearn's lighthouse software, and/or multisgnature transactions to ensure everyone acts out our agreements.

Hosting costs $0.83 per day.
Current Bitcoin Balance: 0.232
Current funds pay for ~3.5 months. :/

I don't post here much as I run a site myself, but I would be happy to participate in this and I think its a great idea. I regularly use the resources found here and I would hate to see it go down for a month. I did not realize you were so low on funding for site hosting, I'll put a donation in the address once I am done traveling.

Cheers

If you don't mind saying, what site do you run? I'm always looking to lurk on others :)

Oh also I updated the first post because after some thinking I figured ways to make it even more desirable to donate.

Hey everyone ;D.

vesp, I'd like to donate a little chunk.  be happy to.

the site is good and i read here several hours a week.
but..... I have never used bitcoin.  for that matter i dont use a bank or credit cards either.

so i suppose i could get a lil prepaid visa....

id prefer to send a m.o.

is that ok?  or do i need to quirt being lazy and learn bitcoin?

btw.... is it a conflict of interest for mods or admin at the lycaeum to donate? 8)

Not a conflict of interest I wouldn't think. I'd be happy to even work with lycaeum if we found a reason to do so.

I could help you with bitcoin.
Prepaid might work also, not really sure how though.

I can send you a small tip or something for expirement purposes if you'd like.
Best place to buy is coinbase, Circle, or localbitcoins. Depending on how quick, what quantity or how anonymous you want it to be.

Dude, I'll donate, no problem-But I don't know Bitcoin either.  PayPal or money order or pay for something you need from eBay and send to an address you say? Besides Rhodium, I've learned everything here and feel privileged and lucky to have the ability to connect with like minded bees...

I did a little bit in 2011 thanks to hearing about silkroad on this site. Along with subversive technologies like Tor, I2P, and Freenet, Bitcoin is my primary interest these days.

I would really like to be able to donate to this but am financially unable, if you wouldn't mind I can make this site known to others who I trust would help out, it may take a little bit for me to do so but I think I have some coinage that can be sent your way!

If they benefit from the site, feel free to pass it along.
But note the site currently has 0.23870792 BTC, which is 90.19 US Dollar, which is about 110 days of hosting.

Also, and I mean this pretty casually - does anyone find interest in trying to integrate the old synthetical and hive archives into this forum?
I was thinking it'd be kind of neat to somehow take the old HTML archives and put them into a database - the users of those sites would be null, but possibly the threads could all be revived allowing for additional comments.

I don't think I'd do this with the RogueSci, but perhaps that as well. They'd be isolated as just new boards "The Hive Revived" and "Synthetical Revived"

Awesome response to my first question, I will let those that may benefit know about the site, it is a very interesting place and needs to keep going and I should have won a contest that nets you some hosting time.

For the second part of my reply, ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING! HELL YES! LETS GET THE REVIVAL STARTED! OOOH LAWDY I FEEL IT!

(to clarify fuck yes get that shit up here and allow for comments, if you build it they will cum)

Yeah. It's a bit of work. It's a cool idea but I have a feeling some people would be rather opposed to it.

It's very hard to make everyone happy, but I don't see anything wrong with that move.

Unfortunately the entire process would be a pretty big ordeal I think: scraping the HTML into a database (easy) and then converting it into a SMF MySQL database/table (painfully difficult for someone like me) and then merging it with this forum (medium).

I need to look into it more.

If you do so, I believe a lot of people would appreciate it if you shared the relevant scripts used with woelen from SciMad, maybe it'll get them to finally do away with the abhorrent forum software they are currently on.

I'm assuming you weren't planning on just doing the data entry manually?

Sciencemadness is bad forum software? I really always liked it for some reason. And yes, I'd open source it for sure.

No way I'd do it manually.

I will reach out my feelers to those who are much better with a computer and these type of things than me, I don't see why a combined effort couldn't get that project done, same goes for keeping this site going and funded.

Anyone have experience with MySQL? Can pay you in bitcoin, need help with the hive/synthetikal integration idea.

I can get the stuff into a database, but converting it into a SMF forum database is something I am not able to do.
I can also merge two SMF MySQL databases.

For all the things that I've learned since I found this site, I can donate on a monthly basis 5$-15$. I don't want any refunds / stars / bling-blings on my avatar. I just want this site up and running on a daily basis.
I can pay via Western Union, since I'm not used to bitcoins, and my VISA is strictly personal.
If this is O.K. just give me some W.U. details on pm...

Oh right.  Yeah I can send an unused bitcoin address to anyone via GPG if they prefer. Also I'm working on Western Union or whatever else is a secret-y way. I am not familiar with it at all.

I want to say that you may sincerely want to consider other means of payment to help with hosting other than BTC.

I have seen that there has been some issue with BTC lately and do not want any issues coming out of it.

I have never used it myself but believe that there are some inherent issues with relying on it for your hosting funding... mainly that some illegal trading sites that were busted used BTC and I have seen another board switch hosts due to their hosting being funded by BTC.

I would go more into detail but I am not the expert on this stuff, someone else chime in on this if they can, I am just here to say "there may be an issue here..."

I have been using bitcoin since 2011 and haven't had any problems with it. Unless you have a specific reason for this (PM me if private) I'd say I pretty well trust bitcoin.

I think all is fine. :)

Make any headway on another way to pay besides Bitcoin? It changes value to much for me. Or is it possible to add funds to your bitcoin with a card number? pm me if needed.

I'm on bad terms with PayPal, so I'll figure out something.

I was very sad when the hive died and would hate to see that happen here.

Anyone have experience with MySQL? Can pay you in bitcoin, need help with the hive/synthetikal integration idea.

I can get the stuff into a database, but converting it into a SMF forum database is something I am not able to do.
I can also merge two SMF MySQL databases.

You can do it without knowing any MySQL. Microsoft Excel and Notepad++. Export the Hive database as as CSV, have a look at the structure of an SMF table and alter the Hive CSV so it follows the same format/columns as an SMF database. Notepad++ regex is good because it allows you to masschange parts of a text file based on complex rules and Excel is good because you can rearrange columns and add new columns of a certain format, say a postid that needs to increase etc.
