  I believe that the large excess of NaBH4 is because they keep trying to do it on a substrate without any liquid, ie: dry conditions... it would probablly work better on a substrate in a liquid suspension...

doing similar reactions (reductive aminations of ketones) using this system on clay, or zeolit supports in a microwave.
Anyway the chemist would place a bowl filled with dry ice/alcohol slush on top of the beaker while the mix was being microwaves when dealing more volitile amines to recondense them.
