Nitrostyrene & Zn in toluene + HCl(g) question.
« on: October 23, 2003, 04:55:00 PM »
After a horrible failure at attempting to reduce 2,5-DiMEO-nitrostyrene swim was going to extract the nitrostryene from the the zn+nitrostryene mixture he made.  He
was going to use toulene and then distill off the toluene.

He noticed that for some reason the toulene made a somewhat homologous mixuture with the nitrostyrene.  and is wondering   will a reduction occur if  the mixture is gassed with some HCl?

Just saw some papers beating around that bush.
Give it a try.
Pre-amalgamated zinc powder can be found in the center of alkaline batteries. ;)

I hope so, It would be nice if this works, and your crude product would be able to be filtered out of the solution (along with the ZnCl).

Once all my exams are over I can give this a try.
