DIY Medical Tools to fight the Pandemic
« on: March 13, 2020, 03:53:43 AM »
We are perfect for this type of thinking, always working in an adversarial environment with scarce or limited supplies.

https://hackaday.com/2020/03/12/ultimate-medical-hackathon-how-fast-can-we-design-and-deploy-an-open-source-ventilator/

Anyone want to start spit balling ways to help people fight the virus?

My thought is: Salt Masks

My thoughts are this: it's too hard to make a proper filter and especially one that allows for enough air to pass. You'll never properly make a thin filter at home that is equal to an N95 and easy to breath.

However, Salt on the surface of a mask dries out the virus carrying aersoles and it also deactivates the virus. See here:
https://www.nature.com/articles/srep39956
It makes the N95 masks reusable.

What if we had something like this:

Sawdust soaked in a saturated salt and soap solution and then dried. This makes for a high surface area material that has many small salt crystals, and as air passes through it must diffuse and take many paths.

This would hopefully allow for enough airflow and cause the virus aersole particles to travel in a long and convoluted path, eventually hitting onto the salt crystals and being deactivated.

Something like a Pop bottle over the face, connected to another pop bottle full of the salty sawdust might work effectively, though be too bulky to use in practice. Poke air holes in the bottom, and it will have to travel through it entirely. Maybe something like a long flexible tube full of the salt doped sawdust could work better.

Open to criticism on the idea, how it might be improved or not work, etc.

How about passing air through a filter made up out of a UV-C light, from what iv'e read that stuff kills stuff in water effectively so air should be at least as effective, it even breaks down certain drugs.

I think you all saw this :)

Further I thought those bags for vacuum cleaners are HEPA-like and may be of use...

In my country it seems the most valuable idea would be a substitute for toilet paper :)

Facemasks are more usefull to stop/slowdown the spread of the virus when they get used by people already with it.
The only protection from it is full body hazmat suits, full face & glove protection.
A breathing facemask wont stop you getting the virus in thru your eyes. Most peoples ideas of what to do are a bit silly.

Really all you can do is to stock up food etc for a month +. Seclude yourself away, at home or such, away from others, and stay like that untill whats happening in your area is over.  That means no contact with anybody from outside at all. Keep the pets in.
Go into seclusion as soon as you hear that its in your area, or somebody you know has it, or that somebody you know, knows somebody with it.
yeah, total boredom for 4~7 weeks, general public mayhems possibly going to be the problem in European/American countrys, wish I had a gun now LoL, thanks Cindy... No I never had a gun anyway.
The electricitys still going to be on, so is the water & the sewerage. Rubbish will get picked up & even if you do get the virus, its a 1 in 5 chance of dying anyway.
Afterwards there will be a big shift of $$ & chattels from people dying & wills etc.
No lack of housing, huge shortage ofvimports & exports that will take a year to recover.
Money wont be worth what it was, good or bad, same with commoditys. Lots of people out of one job, and into another.

Really, just knowing shit like we do is the best thing you could have except for already owning stuff that people will need in the future. Knowing how to make stuff, fix stuff, instruct & teach.
Simply knowing how to make alcohol right now is a good start.
Distilling OTC denatured alcohol to get clean clear alcohol sanitizer in a few hours, its a sought after commodity right now. Supermarkets are running out of hand sanitizers already. Its being price gouged to hell too.
Offer 99.9% pure alcohol. Double your $$, triple them.

More like 3 out of hundred.
I would suggest that you guys share information like it was the last day on Earth.  This information slowdown is all because of all that dumb unwillingness to share.  That is where the DEA is winning.  There goal is you not talking to each other.  Let the information flow.  I  promise we will always be 2 steps ahead of DEA chemists if we just keep sharing information

Depending on the resistance while breathing through it, maybe synthetic filter discs for mushroom growing could be useful?
It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it.

Is this makeable to a home chemist? It seems to be the only, sorta proven, treatment for Corina virus.

Well, I would assume most of us are relatively young and healthy individuals(stop consumption as long as the weather is still cold to assure good immune system functions), without preexisting conditions, then we should be well anyways.
It is not worse than the flu.
I hope I get it soon too as well as the majority of people, so that the hysteria is over fast.

99% of the people who died in italy were elderly with 2-3 preexisting conditions.
Also, in italy it is common for grams and gramps to live in a household with their younger offspring, which faciliates the chances to become infected greatly.

Just keep in mind that the majority of the people who got it are already healthy and well again and have overcome the infection.

There is a thread on SM that is pretty recent concerning this. Check it out, there may be some goodies within.

There was a spot on CNN today, that they've broadcast at least three times over the last week, reporting that a big part of the problem is unqualifyed people flooding the net with missinformation about masks, possible vacines, chemicals and anti malaria drugs that are said by some to help.

Then after that came a second spot where they told the population that they should stop watching (so much) TV and the press because the information flood is confusing them.

Its just the flu, hyped up to an unbelievable extent.
I stopped using the TV completely and now it seems just like a mass hysteria whenever I go out.

The experiments described below were designed to determine the effect of QR448(a) obtained from Quigley Pharma, Inc. a subsidiary of the Quigley Corporation (Doylestown, PA), on IBV in vitro and in vivo. QR448(a) is a synergistic blend of botanical oleoresins and essential oils in a liquid emulsion of pharmaceutical grade excipients. The exact composition of QR448(a) is available from Quigley Pharma, Inc.
