The following is from the complete book of ecstacy.
Hydramine splitting
Refluxing ephedrine with phosphoric acid yields phenylacetone. There is no available equivalent to ephedrine that would yield piperonylacetone. No time of reaction or yield is given. Auterhoff and Roth[40].

Any thoughts?
ephedrine could be extracted using a methhead technique.
phosphoric acid is otc too.

If you read the text carefully, you'll see that it says that there is NO available compound that would give MDP2P with this method.

But if P2P from ephedrine is what you want, then it should work okay. It has been discussed before here. Search.

Although it should possible to make ring-substituted phenylpropanolamines from benzaldehydes and alanine. Actually, the reaction went from the benzaldehyde to the alpha-hydroxyphenylalanine, which, if I remember correctly, could be decarboxylated to the phenylpropanolamine in "one pot". The references are somewhere. If anyone knows more about this, please comment.

However I wouldn't try it with MDBenzaldehyde, because the sulfuric would most surely tear up the methylenedioxy.

Perhaps vanillin -->vanillylacetone
Then demthylate the vanillylacetone-->3,4-dihydroxyP2P
React with DIM to get MDP2P.

Actually, I tried that a long while ago (just fooling around with it), it didn't work as well as I hoped, but I did get a mix smelling something like phenylacetone (and a whole bunch of black crap in the distilling flask), I should go at that again... it might be the only way for bees of the future to produce meth. It is a very involved method, but it is quite easy and all ingredients are easy to find OTC (the limiting reagent being the ephedrine).

Any organic mixed with some strong H2SO4 solution will be dirty.  Lots of oxidation going on.
