Well for those that may not know the blackhat conference showed that it is now possible to break GSM calls with fairly inexpensive kit making your phone almost completely insecure. Not that it was ever reliable with regards to LE but now everyone that can use a software radio can listen in and intercept. Looking at the article it is something that the telecom companies can fix but whether or not they will remains to be seen.

ouch. I guess unless you've already got half the equipment and the other materials can be sourced. I assume they could be counting the cost of a computer and a transmitter in that price tag. Receivers and transmitters I don't think are all that hard to make and you might be able to use an old phone.
