I'v always been interested in a DIY automatic tablet press. I seem to remember reading the large e lab strike was involved with had a homemade tablet press.

Seems very simple if you are mechanically inclined...
The only part you would HAVE to buy pre-made would be the tube the tablet gets pressed in and the 2 dies. If you bought blank dies and you wanted to have a stamp you could make a homemade sink EDM unit for very cheap.
