Was wondering what the forum consensus would be on the usefulness of a "thanks" feature or similar reputation function for the ranking of posts (likely just in specific sub-fora)...in a perfect world this could perhaps help establish which users are continually providing trusted/factual information, and which ones should maybe UTFSE a lil' more. Could maybe help improve signal-to-noise ratio?
Initial concerns (just for example) include various potentials for abuse, frivolous points being given away, and not the least of which might be the fostering of an unfriendly atmosphere (the antithesis of the site as it now stands imo). The following hypothetical situation will hopefully illustrate this concern:
Again, this is only a hypothetical....but no one wants this forum to come to that....
Hopefully the proposed idea hasn't been defeated whilst explaining its possible shortcomings, but one supposes restrictions such as a minimum number of posts in certain sub-fora or the like before being able to give reputation points?
