"Thanks" button anyone?
« on: November 30, 2010, 02:37:02 AM »
Was wondering what the forum consensus would be on the usefulness of a "thanks" feature or similar reputation function for the ranking of posts (likely just in specific sub-fora)...in a perfect world this could perhaps help establish which users are continually providing trusted/factual information, and which ones should maybe UTFSE a lil' more. Could maybe help improve signal-to-noise ratio?

Initial concerns (just for example) include various potentials for abuse, frivolous points being given away, and not the least of which might be the fostering of an unfriendly atmosphere (the antithesis of the site as it now stands imo).  The following hypothetical situation will hopefully illustrate this concern:

Quote
(in response to a post made by a "highly-ranked" member who, posting while stoned made several errors, let's watch)

at 853pm "ieatass" says: i think u muffed your molar math in that second example therr buddy, and the reference links you posted all just point to a site caled "beastforum"

at 914pm "soujlaBerr" says: oh yeah? MY REPUTATION RANKING IS 40000

Again, this is only a hypothetical....but no one wants this forum to come to that....

Hopefully the proposed idea hasn't been defeated whilst explaining its possible shortcomings, but one supposes restrictions such as a minimum number of posts in certain sub-fora or the like before being able to give reputation points?

Just a thort.

The infant was, in fact, doing 'the stanky leg.'

Believe me boy, I seen everything.

Heh  :)

I honestly don't think we need this sort of thing  - though, it could easily be added, all I need to do is enable the "karma" function of the site - but I don't think much good can come from it, and currently I think members know where they stand knowledge wise, as well as who has mastered certain areas.

Glad to see suggestions, I appreciate it. I am interested to hear what other people say, but I am probably not going to go through with this suggestions.

Zoklet has that?

I think a good button might be something that say, once a week you could emphasize a post and bring it up to the top to continue the otherwise dead discussion..

I am actually pretty happy with how the site is now. simplify is key and don't fix it if it aint broke, right?

btw - what does zoklet even mean?

Werd. And it certainly ain't broke. :)

As for the origins of the word "zoklet" I beelieve it was defined in on of my other posts:

Quote
zok-'let: (n) "a blue-grey walled troll cave of horrors"

:D

But serriously, no idear.

Im all for a "likes this" button some things crack me up laughing but i dont want to waste room replying with 'haha' some posts from users are amazing you just think jeez awesome post, but then i write 'awesome post' and vesp deletes it! its like a slave labor camp no fun allowed! dont get me wrong though i hate big messy forums packed with irrelevant posts, i am all for deleting shit ones.. a 'likes this' button would be sweet though
