Come Laugh at my lack of Internets Knowledge - resize profile picture?

Not really a problem with the site, and sorry if this should be in the den...

Is it possible to re-size one's profile picture? Every image I upload re-formats into a square and squashes the image.

I wants to have a cooooool normal-looking profile picture, like all the cool kids :'(

Also, I and I are having loads of difficulty actually uploading said picture...actually, havent been able to upload a picture at all, only success we've had is linking to a pic from google images. Unfortunately, when signed in today, the .gif that was linked to yesterday had mysteriously disappeared...

Anyone else had trouble with uploading an image from ones harddrive as a profile pic?

If you wanna link to an external image then upload it to ImageShack beforehand.

I can't find any resolution limit given for the avatar, but usually there is one. There's no need to use a resolution larger than 100x100 pixel if you are using the picture only as avatar. MS Paint is capable of resizing an image.

There are also often kB limits for avatars. None given in the profile menu, but I recommend to try your luck with .gif or .jpg, which give both very small files.
