"Hunches" and "intuition" share a common modality: we appreciate that the sum of the circumstances observed do not equal the value we commonly encounter. Something is amiss in the column we add up, without thinking, and evaluate without realizing... and we do not know what, exactly, it is that makes things come out wrong, but we know the end result is not what we expect.
It is often wise to follow such intuitions, as we usually recognize what the abnormality is in due time, if it does not run over us like a freight train at the crossing, or a leaky oil tanker in the night.
