getting logged out and loseing your whole post!
« on: April 03, 2011, 02:03:24 AM »
Is it just me or does this happen to others too, i imagine it does, and it pisses me off!

writing up a full response, gathering links, quoting texts, editing and proof reading... then when you go to post it you get logged out because your time is up, you lose your whole post and have to start from scratch, then you just re write it half assed and post it lol

Usually if I hit back, the post is still there. It might depend on your browser.

So many things can happen with a browser or forum software.

If you know you're writing a post longer than a few paragraphs of non-technical information, do it in gedit/notepad/etc, then copy and paste it into your browser. You'll probably find it easier to compose a detailed post in a large text editor window than a small browser textarea element.

It happens to me even - but this seems to work well:
1. Extend the period of time your logged on - I think default is 60 minutes - but you can change it...
2. make sure to at least ctrl A/ctrl C your posts while composing them...
3. Upon pressing "post" and than seeing that you have been logged out, log back in, and than hit the back button a few times - this seems to post whatever you had - not sure how it works, but that happens to me a lot when sending PMs and it ends up sending them anyways...

Ya I usually copy a post that is any bit long before I submit out of habit. I know the frustration! What Vesp said about logging in then going back works because the post headers which contain the post are resent when the submission page is related and because you are logged in now it will work!

If you log in with the form at the top left, rather than the center, it will default to staying logged in forever.

Combine that with a browser which kills cookies on exit and you'll never be logged out so long as you don't close your browser. When you're done browsing places like this, just close out and your cookies will be gone.

I changed the default login time to 240 minutes instead of 60.
Now it will happen less but will still probably happen + now more people will appear logged in (probably) -- but has it has been explained a few times... log stay logged in forever, than set your browser to delete all cookies when you close it.

Additionally.. if it does happen - log back in, and hit the back button several times than go forward - you should have posted the "lost" post.

plus - copy the text before submitting for good measure...
