Someone i met can get a cacti extract and it works a treat except that the first 5 hours of the more than 12 hour trip are a mixture of mescalin and really heavy physical symptoms . Has anyone any ideas of how to clean it up so that its only mescalin ?

acid/base followed by a column or 2 or 3 (as many as required to get pure alkaloids).

From what i hear its been extracted with tap water and a tad of sulphuric acid. I had thought to tell them to basefy it with drain cleaner because they dont have access to better things ( How much / what PH ? They only have litmus paper ) , let it stand for a few hours (How long ?) , then throw some benzene / petrol in ( How much ? They say theres about 6-7 liters of it ) , swirl it and let it sit and separate a few times , then separate the layers , take the benzene bit and drop drops of diluted sulphuric acid in it so the alkaloids drop out and can be filtered out ( They havnt got a fume hood or vacuum pump and the neighbours would not be impressed if the whole street stunk of solvent again. Their fridge isnt big enough for it so they cant do that either ). What i was wondering is that as its a mixed alkaloid extraction is if the crystallisation process would separate any of the bits that cause the heavy physical symptoms out ? Or if not how they can get them out ? I think maybe the only way would be to wash the product with different OTC solvents ? If so which ones ?

Possibly for the future. About the column. They havent got one but they have a long glass pipe which they could fill with something. Or do it in a sep funnel as its got a tap at the bottom. I read that it can be done without special filers just by using something OTC but i cant remember what ? And would they need UV light or ? Anyone any ideas about how to make a self made set up ?

first of all benzene is one of the very few CONFIRMED human carcinogens!!! do not open it outside the hood and wear suitable gloves and a long sleeved shirt (or be a nerd and buy a white lab coat)! or are you talking about benzine, also known as white naphta (high boling point petroleum ether)?
Basification of a mescaline extract should be done to a ph of about 12. defiently above 10, but try to stay below 14 as this can decompose some of it.
When you say petrol, you mean gasoline from the gas station? or petroleum ether? either way, neither of them should be used. you should use a slightly more polar solvent (still non polar, but not as non polar as straight chain alkanes) like toluene, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, etc... DCM and chloroform create nasty emulsions with the cacti extract so dont use those.

About the physical symptoms - mescaline by itself has a physical effect. It can and often does make one puke his guts out, even when it is very pure. However what is probably making you guys sick is the plant matter itself and its undigestable fibers. acid/base should take most of these out.
If you are such ghetto (no real lab equipment) you should do several acid/base cycles with different extraction solvents. cant tell you which ones to try or which ones are OTC (99.99% chance we are not from the same country).
Whenever i work with mescaline, natural or synthetic, i simply distill the freebase alkaloids under high vacuum. this takes care of the cleaning part quite nicely once youve dried and evaporated your freebase mescaline solution. if this is not possible for you (and it seems like it), id suggest going to forums like dmt-nexus or mycotopia to get detailed info on how to extract crystalline mescaline from cacti ghetto style.

Regarding column chromatography - if you can get a buchner funnel, you can carry a DCVC style column. it is easy, simple and quick. look on google for a blog called curly arrow. the blogger is the author of the DCVC article, which has also been archived on rhodium's. most common chromatography techniques require either silica-gel or alumina, particle size should be as small as you can get. for DCVC tlc grade silica/alumina is good. anything below 40um sized particles is good. for flash chromatography (with pressure) 60-40um is the common size. for gravity chromatography up to 200um can be used.
Silica dust is carcinogenic! do not breath it! either wear an inhalation filter or do it in the hood!

Look around over at Wet dreams for a person named Tramp, Hes no longer around but his post remain. He posted means of cleaning extract to a pure white smokable form. Careful because there is good odds this was part of his undoing. Never abuse the gifts god gives, that added crap would have stopped some people from taking to much.
