if there was ever any women around
I have no doubt there have always been a few around, but it's not too uncommon for men to use female pseudonyms as well, to add another layer of obfuscation, more easily acquire trust and assistance, etc.
In addition to discouragement from math and science, women also have naturally lower risk tolerances. It probably wasn't too great from an evolutionary standpoint to have the sex that carried around our offspring for nine months and played the primary role in raising them engage in too many risky behaviors, while men were judged for their ability to fend off and track down dangerous game. Testosterone also promotes competitiveness, the need to be right, to figure things out, make things work (sound familiar?) Illicit chemistry is also a largely solo effort despite the prevalence of forums like this, and even though we hunted in groups women tend to be more sociable (again tied to child carrying and rearing.)
There aren't many female floor traders or poker pros either and I don't think it can all be tied to societal pressure. I'm not at all trying to imply that men are somehow overall better, but these particular kinds of work just have much more appeal to us. They're all very similar to hunting in that there's a lot of planning and research involved, evaluating failures and making improvements, and substantial measurable rewards for successes.
