Paint shakers - useful OTC equipment for certain reactions
« on: May 18, 2011, 06:36:23 PM »
Paint shakers are an OTC, very common piece of equipment which can be repurposed for our uses, particularly for reactions needing a great deal of mixing between liquid and gaseous phases (e.g., Wacker oxidation).

Not being in touch with the household/DIY/project scene, I never would have thought about using this equipment for home chemistry.

Having an opportunity to see one in action made me immediately think of other things to shake besides paint.

Specialty paint stores are full of goodies beyond just good solvents.

See here to visualize these in action:

the idea has been proposed before and it's a good one.

when I first got into this hobby that was really my first revelation... "Oh I can use a painshaker to scale up the wacker" - It was overjoyed and it started a serious obsession... never did get that paint shaker...

This is a very interesting idea for shaking culture vessels, in addition to reaction mixtures, and I would love to see more data about the actual use of it.

Many aeons ago, a distant associate (now deceased through heart attack) asked me, "how can I do a 40 liter catalytic reduction in one go?" - I replied, use a 50 liter thick-walled glass wine vessel, seated well in an old modified washing machine, remove the center and fix a large bar magnet. When run in wash mode, the rotating clockwise/anti-clockwise action of the large bar magnet will rotate clockwise/anti-clockwise the stirrer magnet in the 50 liter thick-walled glass wine vessel.

Lol 50 litres i be flat out doing 50 mils.. i would have used a dough stirrer from a bakery or something but there be no reflux on it the whole are would be methylamined out.. yeah washing machine works lol

with shakers, jigsaws and reciprocating saws are the way to go.. they dont shake huge but the speed they run agitates the solution so much it is nuts

As for the 50 litre, not sure what i would have done..

Not the first time I read references to reciprocating saws/jigsaws...nice idea.

Have you got a writeup, perhaps? I have been trying to visualise potential ways to get from A to Bee, as far as a functional stirrer goes, but am concerned about potential violence/impact breaking the glass.

Not something that can be afforded.
