I found the campa chem formaldehyde at "Walmart", both the blue liquid and the solid para-formaldehyde. What state or country do you live in?

Thats what I got from the same place in question. I have yet to use it because I was going to make methylamine from it but I found a better way to yeild methylamine then dealing with solutions of unknown concentrations and contaminations. Easier just to get sulfamic acid and make a ton from that instead cheep.

Yes, acid is the catalyst for the dimmerization of formaldahyde to paraformaldahyde.

"formalin" is also used as a medication for fish, and sold in some larger pet stores.

Mildewcide is quite acceptable para formaldehyde with no blue or perfumes.  SWIM I know used it and it seems to not have anything that would keep it from being usable in reactions.

It is available from Ace hardware (1.49 for 4 oz powder 91% paraformaldehyde)  in FL during the spring  and no doubt other places - apparently it's big use in wet and warm places is for Canadians to put in their trailers when they close them up for the Summer months.  So it is a sort of seasonal item and I hadn't seen it til just this month and its nearly gone.

I'm more into natural plant extraction than synthesis chemistry

Salat, please don't mention sources or information that identifies your geographic location.  This is both against the site rules and, more importantly, increases your risk (whether or not you're doing anything but legal!).

I've found that "seasonal" form of para to contain methylcellulose or some similar gooey binder... this completely messes up the extractions and some even carries over during distillation/volume reduction.  Nasty stuff, but I've never met a deterrent I couldn't defeat... dry polymerization (or similar) may be the best route, tho.

nef reaction on nitromethane I would think would be the easiest way to make it.
