methanesulfonic acid
« on: May 09, 2009, 12:25:57 AM »
I have been looking for a source of this for a while.  99% or 70% would do. I hear it is used in electroplating, but I can find anyone that will sell it to individuals...

Its not at all suspicious, I just have bombed out trying to get a liter of it.

If anyone knows a good source that would be nice...

I don't want to have to synthesis it, as I will need large amounts...

I've looked a little bit and the only sources I've been able to find are in small quantities for a large sum of money. I've actually had a really hard time finding sources for chemicals, so this really isn't one of my strong points.

I have had a critical use for a superacid stronger than sulfuric for a little while now and haven't been able to find one. Perhaps in your case you could substitute another superacid (tosic, triflic, etc.) which is probably just as hard to acquire but requires that you talk to companies that haven't blacklisted you yet. I don't think there are OTC alternatives, but synthesis isn't that difficult and is rather scaleable.

Here is a paper I've mentioned a couple of places, the other papers on this aren't quite so accessible, but the chemistry is apparently well and truly known

There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
And drinking largely sobers us again.

It is used to remove graffitti from architectural stoneworks (fancy office buildings) in some places (US) in dilute solutions.

Havent come across it either, but have been looking.........you playing around with aryl ethers? ;)

Tried to get some myself one time.....ordered it and it NEVER came....shit out of money on that one!
