Toluene
« on: June 13, 2009, 11:51:57 PM »

What is the best source ya'll have found for toluene? There is a brand call Goo Gone that is nothing but toluene/acetone/methanol but the bad part is that you get left with only about 50-100ml of very clean toluene for about 4 or 5$. This sucks and distillation is the best way to go. I have searched some consumer products databases and found a few things that are 50% toluene but I was woundering what your favorite source for this is.

Ace has it by the quart and gallon like home depot use to?
I have not seen it but the ace store around here was also nothing more then a counter that us plumbers went to until fairly recently so Ill have to check it out. I gotta go get some roto brand NaOH anyway so may as well see if I can get toluene and potassium permagnate also while im there.

I swear I've seen it in walmart by the gallon. If not try a small wood, general purpose hardware store. I see it for sale in places like that all the time.

Menards is typically where I buy mine, but also ACE hardware.  Menards is more of a midwestern store, so some of you on the west cost probably wont know what it is.

I visited seven hardware stores today, searching for toluene.
Home Depot, Lowes, Sherwin Williams, a small local store, Sears, Tractor Supply Co., and Ace. Only Ace carried Toluene, 1gal/20usd. Most of the others carried xylene, dimethylbenzene, an equally useful solvent but much less useful chemical feedstock.

Ace carries toluene, xylene, MEK, acetone, and hexane by the gallon.

I find physical stores to be hit or miss (usually miss) but I can always find it online no problem. Last I paid online was $10 a gallon and if I remember correctly the shipping wasn't that bad either. I think it was a boat supply store (takes a lot of toluene to remove and repaint a boat).
