Static Guest?
« on: September 28, 2011, 10:50:33 PM »
Who is "Guest"? Other than someone trying to login, 'he' is nearly always there... I can't imagine that for more than a few minutes someone will be trying to login... but hey, you can prove me wrong.
Or, are there truly that many people always logging in?

Sentinels.

They're called lurkers, and the majority of the membership here does nothing but. I don't have access to the data the way the admin(s) do, but I know someone registers everyday, yet it's the same handful of us who post. I don't understand lurking. If I had a board like this, it would be set up to suspend your account if your viewing/posting ratio got too lopsided. It's already bad enough with people being paranoid n shit on a board like this without all these spectators in the shadows. Vesp could suspend every single one of their accounts and we would never know it since they contribute nothing at all to this community. The only thing that would be missed is the name at the bottom of the screen who is viewing. but that you've never seen on a post. I'd live.

The purpose of allowing lurking, and the purpose of this forum is too allow people to learn information. You can learn a lot from simply reading the forum, and I believe they give back to this community eventually, or in a certain way. At least they do not take away from this site.
Many people know they don't need to share the little, simple, and wispy information/knowledge they have. I'd rather have a lurker, than a member who never shuts up and posts junk all of the time.

Guests are often bots/spiders/web-crawlers, and people who are not signed in/signing in/registering, or just viewing the website because they were linked here.

Not a big deal at all.

reDEEMed, the main factor that causes lurking is that newbees like myself have little or nothing to contribute. so we just observe in awe.

Well, I don't feel like I have anything to add either and Vesp hasn't banned me yet. Every now and then I find a great book to share or I stumble across something in my experimentation that I think is worth sharing, but for the most part I'm just a parasite, here to take other people's knowledge and greedily apply to my own endeavors. I would assume most people think they have nothing to add, but actually they do.
