Sassafras liquor?
« on: December 31, 2011, 06:55:55 PM »
So im sure you guys have ran across this before in your studies.  Apparently it was used as a folk medicine.  Does anyone know a good book, etc that has recipes for distilling liquor over sassafras root ala absinth? I know a company recently started a product line "ROOT" that mimics the taste.  Im not worried about what the FDA has to say about it, I want the real stuff.

I suggest have a look here , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe#Production and the references.

Sassafras is hepatotoxic, at least, safrole is.

I know of someone who came down with liver failure from drinking sassafras tea.

Perhaps some silibin/silymarin in the mix would negate that.

I was under the impression that silymarin was poorly absorbed per os. The formulation that gets used to treat poisoning by amatoxins (Amanita, Lepiota, Galerina and certain conocybe mushroom species) is given by I.V, and as far as I know, the reason is its not absorbed well at all by the G.I tract.

Well IV is no doubt more effective immediately, but if you have extract in bulk and don't mind using a gram or two a day I'd have no doubt about it being noticeably helpful.

I mean, we're not talking about sudden, acute safrole poisoning are we? I guess I just assumed cumulative damage over time was the idea.

It appears to be surprisingly toxic (sassafrass oil), this source (an old herbal) hxxp://botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/s/sassaf20.html states that a teaspoonful of the oil ingested by a man  'produced vomiting, dilated pupils, stupor and collapse'

According to the same, it also produces fatty degeneration of the kidneys and heart.
And something more modern:

I really wouldn't try this. Sassafras oil is pretty toxic stuff, and carcinogenic to boot. Also, since
the target organs of toxicity include at least the heart and kidneys, if not other organs also, then a hepatoprotectant like silymarin would not be of much use.
