As someone who has done a small amount of time I'll put in my two cents- count yourself lucky to have gotten federal time. Federal time is easier, though there is no such thing as parole. You'll ateast be able to educate yourself, something most wardens don't allow. 4 years sucks and it hurts my heart that another fellow citizen is being caged for something that shouldn't be criminal. My thoughts are with you, and that's real shit. I also believe that prohibition on drugs is about to be over. It's conceivable that by the time you're released the thing you were locked up for will no longer be a crime.

Hollywood wants you to believe that shortly after you arrive you'll be bullied and ass fucked for your dinner, this is simply not true. The most important strength to have is mental. The feeling of being confined wears at a man. The last few months of my life has taught me that happiness is a state of mind. It actually has very little to do with the external. If I had to assign a percentage I would say 2% of the external and 98% of the internal is what creates happiness. Stay strong in your mind, bro. Defy expectations at every opportunity. These idiots have certain expectations of you, don't play in to them. When you have the urge to smash and crack heads, give a smile and words of wisdom. This will seriously fuck with people and give them pause when handling you. I'm a master at this and it has served me well. I defy classification at every turn, you should do the same, if you don't already.

At the end of the day I can only say that I'm sorry. Be strong, like you seem to be, and come out way more dangerous that you went in. Knowledge is power, snatch it up and make them pay for it. The government forces us to complicite with all sorts of nasty shit. I say that because we will all let you go to jail. We won't storm the lawn of the white house, a huge angry mass of wronged people seeking blood retrobution. This is why I say we are complicite(am I spelling that right?). My point is, now make them into the cocreators of an evil genius. Learn, mang, learn.

Good luck :^(

yeah its a whack of time, but could be worse, and as a drug offender, you'll probably have some secret friends amongst the screws ... you'll see

in many ways its like a weird boys school with its bullies sure, but most peeps just want to kick on with it

yeah its good you mentioned this coz IT IS bullshit, it may have been the case long ago but certainly isn't now (althogh they have free condom vending machines in prisons over here, but I think thats more for wrapping shit up you want to put where the sun dont shine for security reasons :P

give pause? yes maybe, stop?  no!!!   realise there ARE a lot of fuckwits and desperados in there,  there is NO hurry to get to know them, and they will come and suss you out pretty quick, if only to see what they can get :-\ and/or just out of curiousity, which is kinda understandable, sadly. :-\

but on the other hand, you'll also most likely meet a few folks who you'll get on really well with, after all, you are in there, and fwiw you've made me laugh  ;D 8)

it never hurts to expect the unexpected, in life and especially in prison, although once you get to the place you will stay for a while, you will find most of the tenants find comfort in routine, and dont take kindly to those who disrupt it.

i.e. dont do what I did, and accidentally start a riot, ::) which resulted in half the prison getting 'tipped' (slang over here for getting moved somewhere else when its not your choice) including myself, finding myself on an almost continuous circiuit of about 5 facilities...they call it "transport therapy" which totally fucks your chances of settling in to somewhere...
I think the shortest I was somewhere, was long enough to make my bed :o and then a screw came and told me "#1, you're on the next truck!"  Fuck!

absofuckinlutely 8) and come out "deadly" which is oz aboriginal slang for the best ;D

hey before you do go,  DT? have you sorted out someone to send you books and stuff?  it can really help (and the odd few $'s ;D)

I believe most prison have web sites these days, so you could always let google(and friends ::)) know your curious about a few federal prisons and check out a few likely facility's facilities ;D ( I wonder what type of ads they'd throw your way as a result  :o)

once again all the best bruzzzzzer wasp

from what I know of you, you'll be fine 8)

Haha, thank you guys, I appreciate it.

I'm not sweating being cornholed or anything. I'm a big dude and I don't mind putting a gang of fuckheads in their place; one on one or all at once. I don't mind being in a cell 23hrs a day either. I can sleep like a hibernating bear and the last six years I worked at my last job was in an 8x8 foot cement room, underground, 14 hrs a day, 6 - 7 days a week.

I'm already a natural.  :P

I won't be getting into anyone else's business.. It's just not the way I am. I'm cool with doing my own time.

I don't really have anything sorted out as far as books & commissary goes but a few of you guys have made some touching offers but seriously, don't put yourself out of pocket for me. I'll take your good intentions to heart and I won't forget, so thank you. :)

As told, I'm passing on my info to a few people here & at the lyc: Vesp, fishinabottle, tryl, Moolybdenum, RoidRage and probably a few others if anyone wants to get in touch.

I've reg'd a couple gmail accounts but I'm not sure if they'll permit access. MisConvicted@gmail.com & MisantInaCan@gmail.com.

I have to purchase phone & email access credits at a dollar a minute (what a racket!) so my communication other than written letters, will be sparse, but if permitted, I will check them on a somewhat regular basis.

How about we all make suggestions for reading lists for you? Nothing helps more in jail than a good book...

Anything by Carl Hiaasen is awesome, twisted humor, assholes dying satisfying deaths, really all around great stuff. "Stormy Weather" is a favorite - a hurricane wipes out a town in Florida and the next day a mobile home salesman is found crucified and impaled on a TV satellite dish...

David Sedaris' "Naked" is very funny, entertaining...

"Transmetropolitan" is a 10 volume graphic novel set in the future, following a journalist resembling Hunter S. Thompson... sick, deranged, funny, and insightful. Highly recommend it.

Will add more as ideas come to mind...

Assyl, those sound awesome! I'm in. Thank you.   ;D

reDEEMed: Thank you for the words of wisdom.

So, basically what I'm waiting for is my inmate number so I can pass it around. Is that my US Marshal's number?

I imagine a drug charge wouldn't make you a target for the guards. I had three felony assault on police, they treated with a bit of malice :^P

Like he said, they give you enough rope to royally fuck yourself. Ive never had a federal charge or a drug charge for that matter, but I have noticed that the goal of every legal structure I've ever been caught up in was to keep you in the system. They normally do this by doing exactly as he said, giving you enough rope.

WazOne: I'm a non violent offender. Always have been.  :P

The camp I'm going to doesn't even have walls. You can walk right off camp if you don't mind adding another 5 years to your sentence.

Speaking of, fuckit, I can't find my USM number so I'm just gonna send the crew my info. BOP website should be enough.

f1: Thank you man. I'm looking forward to getting out & off. The plus side is: All my ex g/f's seem to want booty calls lately and my present g/f is not only cool with it, she brought in her own! :)

God, I've missed that. Timing sure is a bitch though, eh? lol

Assyl: Carl Hiaasen sounds awesome! Thank you.

I'm gonna try to get that one read before I go in. I'm just finishing off a Donald Westlake novel at the moment called Jimmy The Kid, a kidnap comedy caper (a Dortmunder novel) based on a book called Child Heist by Richard Stark (Westlake's pen name for serious crime noir) and it's pretty hilarious. I love Westlake/Stark novels. If you love crime fiction, this is great stuff.  :P

Evidently the non-law library at the camp sucks but I was just reading about fed camps & it doesn't really sound like books (or cell phones or booze or women or ... or... or...) will be difficult to obtain, IF camps on the left coast are at all like camps on the right.

http://fprison.wordpress.com/2009/11/09/federal-prison-camp

But I'll have to keep my nose clean (*cough cough) for the DnA program they have to shave a year off the time. Unless that thing is also corrupt & available to bribery.

Guess I'll know when I get there.

Oh, great, thanks for the suggested reading material.

Anything by Carl Hiaasen is fantastic. You should get every book he's ever written to accompany you in. They'll pass a month or two of time quite nicely guaranteed.

"The Lock Artist" is absolutely amazing... it's dark, but ended up reading it in one sitting, only time that's ever happened with a novel...

A recommendation for you Doctor: Find a complete list of inmates & pictures , try to make descriptions ( of crimes and personalities) of each one before you get inside so that you don't have to get-to-know someone's background the hard way.
That article makes things seem very hopeful.
off to bigger and better things - don't worry I will visit from time to time

For altered states, you might try doing several Philip K. Dick novels in a row.  Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Ubik, Clans of the Alphane Moon, etc.
