Does anyone have any ideas as to making/obtaining a homemade sonicator?

I have been looking at cleaning devices, but I have not found many, all have been industrial units and not cheap!

there were ones at school although rarely used...I dont know why ???

they are very helpful for encouraging rxns which otherwise would at best be sluggish :)

rarely are they mentioned around these forums, yet many processes discussed here would be enhanced with one i.e. dirty/wet gringards proceed easily with some 'tunes' ;)

I cant recall ever seeing them mentioned...does anyone know why?

cheers

I have seen ultrasonic cleaners (maybe you should google for this  ;)) quite often sold for cleaning gems or glasses. This are low power things though. More professional parts can be aquired at any of the many second hand places (Ebay?).

For a matter of fact ultrasound the same as microwaves helps only in rather few reactions and mostly only in the mmol range. Initiating a Grignard thats to be told a charm.
But its simply not worth the costs.

Ultrasonic cleaners are commonly used not only for jewelry but for cleaning tattoo/piercing equipment in high level disinfectant.
Alimentary, dear Watson; I had a gut feeling.

thanx all, yeah I have seen the cleaners but they are expensive...maybe I'll luck out hopefully....the idea of acquiring one only came recently after some epic fails..... ::)

funny you should mention bonsais lugh, as I was playing with one a few hours ago :o however I dont think you were speaking literally about it, although I could be wrong.... ??? could you please elaborate? ;D

I'd love to give a few rxns a push with sound....I am not a big fan of microwaves...had a few blow up!  :P

And the heat generated is not helpful for my purposes

if I do luck out I promise to share ;)

I got a nice collection of sonicators a few months ago on eBay for pennies on the dollar. Just check everyday for "sonicator" , "sonic probe" , "ultrasonic probe" , "ultrasonic welding" , etc. Got a huge 1000watt sonicator for $30 in perfect condition with a booster horn and welding tip. Now I just have to get an amp for it...

I have a heat-systems W-225R. very effective for cell disruption, even tough fungal cells.
