Piperonal extraction
« on: June 24, 2012, 04:45:31 PM »
So here is the deal:

In some anti-mite powder, piperonal is present. So why not try to extract this "soo 90's" active ingredient?

Here is the scenario:

Piperonal, Cedarwood oil, Tea Tree oil in a powder concentration.

What first jumps to my mind, hmm why not try to extract it with some hot IPA.

Then trying to figure out Cedarwood oils solubility, which apparently is hard.

How would you guys go about extracting it? A/B extraction comes to mind..

Any input is welcome

An aldehyde isn't going to be able to be separated from anything using an acid-base extraction  ;)  The bisulfite or iodo adducts seems to be the most likely workable methods which you could have found using various search engines ::)  As always, the end results from the effort applied  8)

I dont think any insecticide contains piperonal at all? Its definitely piperonylbutoxide youve meant:
hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piperonyl_butoxide
but I am afraid to see there is at least for me no practical way from there to piperonal visible without research?
Your search will end far more successfull soon if you take a look in readily available aroma and essential mixtures, and their MSDS. ;D
There are several mixtures with a few dozen percent of piperonal, adulterated with very few substances, sometimes its just a 1:1 mixture of piperonal and something else! ;D At least in europe this is the case, even in countries were piperonal is listed!

Edit: didnt saw you gave a list of ingredients, so do exactly what lugh advised get your hands on some Na2SO3, so mix up a strong solution it hydrolyses ready to NaHSO3 and there you go, cant be much simpler and more efficient than the bisulfite-adduct supported extraction when one is after an aldehyde.
There is already a thread about exactly the same topic here, have you already tried to use piperonal in TFSE? ;)
