Separating the safrole from illicium parviflorum (yellow anise)
« on: February 18, 2013, 03:17:38 PM »
I have managed to locate a couple of these trees/shrubs and if someone were to do a steam distillation of some trimmings (lawn care service, anyone?) would the other two alkaloids bee a problem, if so how would someone go about getting rid of them?
Alkaloid content:
Quote
The essential oil from leaves and branches of cultivated I. parviflorum is dominated by 68.14 ± 0.88% safrole, 13.18 ± 1.01% linalool, and 11.89 ± 0.87% methyl eugenol.

You should always purify your precursors.  ;) Use fractional distillation top separate the three.
