caffeine extraction
« on: August 14, 2009, 05:33:45 AM »
Would it be possible to extract caffeine from coffee beans in a similar manner to a STB DMT extraction?

thanks

First page on google. Try next time.

A standard a/b extraction would probably be the most feasible method.

I've done it using a strongly brewed cup of coffee, using either ethyl acetate or chloroform. Possibly tetrachloroethylene. It was a long time ago, but I remember getting little white spikes of caffeine with a small oily brown residue.
Pretty pointless, anhydrous caffiene can be bought at most bodybuilding health food stores. They are a gold mine.

@Heisenberg:
A/B-extraction is pointless in this case, as caffeine is neither considerably acidic nor basic.

@Vesp:
Extracting coffee to obtain caffeine is indeed pointless, as the price for pure caffeine (an uncontrolled and easily available substance!) is ridiculously low. But for the sake of chemical experimentation, I would recommend to make a crude extract first by using boiling water, followed by filtration, then extraction with chloroform. That should give caffeine at a purity that is suitable for recrystallisation or (preferred) sublimation, although the latter technique demands more equipment.

Peace! Murphy
