shelf stability of p-Benzoquinone
« on: March 05, 2013, 04:50:15 AM »
Hi all--

good to see members of various former apiaries here in the vespiary  :-)

I'm wondering about the shelf-life of p-Benzoquinone.  I happen to have come into the possession of said compound that is fairly old (10+ years) unopened, but probably not the best container and in an environment of semi-high humidity.  Anyone have any info on how hygroscopic it is?  Or more importantly I guess, apparently it sublimates at the drop of a hat don't we all?   ???  ... any sort of test of viability anyone could recommend?

thanks!

Look at it. If it's canary yellow crystals it's good, if it's tinted black or green it has at least partially decomposed.

Never had the canary yellow stuff considering I never synthesized it myself/bought it from a chemical supplier and never had any yields problems with the black/green stuff.

well indeed it is a lump of crystalline dark green.  really pungent though.  and quite beautiful in spite of its degraded state.  so Roid, you've used this oxidized(?) version of it and had decent results?

Yes. Always got 100-120g ketone yield from 178g safrole
