Germination of cacti
« on: February 04, 2009, 10:25:38 PM »
In general cacti are very easy to germinate and grow from seeds, a simple setup would involve a small box or dish that has a lid that can fit over it to create humidity, I use a fish tank with plastic wrap covering the top and holes poked in it to allow air circulation.

You can use any kind of soil, miracle grow soil is just fine; you may want to use an anti-fungal and buy DE to prevent gnats, if you do spray the anti-fungal on top of the first layer of soil and lay down the DE as well. Once your soil is down sprinkle your seeds on top of it, then coat them with a very, very thin layer of soil on top of the seeds.
You may want to use something similar to playground sand as it will not grow mold. Use a mister to dampen the soil, do not spray water directly on it but dampen it all with a simple mister, you can purchase one at walmart very cheap.

Depending on type of seed it will germinate anywhere from five or more days depending on conditions.

This picture is germination after approximately one and a half months.

For best results keep the soil warm and in indirect light, you may want to use a heating pad, like they do for iguana cages.

This is a picture after about a year or so of growth.

They are Pedro and Brig.

That's the basic gist of it, for more info shoot me a message or ask around the forum. When I get a chance I will add a simple graft how-to.

Are the small cacti sprouts especially susceptible to damp-off and molds compared to the larger cacti? It seems like they would be, but I can't be sure.

Yes they are. I like to sterilize my seed starting soil by microwaving it for a few minutes. Then I keep the pot covered with a small ziplock or like bag till they get big enough to need transplanting.

I am going to begin germinate the hundred or so cacti seeds I have but I don't want to buy an anti-fungal. I have miracle grow cacti soil, should I use that or normal soil at first? I figure it will dry a lot better and prevent damp off.
I'll mix in a bit of cinnamon, since I hear that works well to prevent bacteria and fungi from growing.

What is meant by indirect light? I won't use the sun, but would a CFL work well, or should I leave it in the shade outside, etc?

Well, I have planted  the ~50 San Pedro Cacti seeds I forgot I had, hopefully they'll grow. I've basically followed this method. It would be nice to have about 50 San Pedro cacti that are a good foot or two long eventually.

I only have 2-3 little struggling cactus plants from those 50 seeds. Many have germinated and died. They seem to be kind of a bitch to grow.  :(

I keep mine in one of these http://inlinethumb26.webshots.com/22937/2778676430095447466S600x600Q85.jpg.

They keep in moisture and have given me the best germination results out of all of my cacti growing attempts. I put them in a window and basically forget about them for several months besides a bit of watering.

I've never really had any luck with those suckers.  But I think I just suck at growing items from seeds  :P

I don't recommend you use just any soil.

Cacti require a lot of drainage. I use the following:

2 parts Commercial Cactus Soil
1 part Perlite
1 part Grit/Paver's Sand
