Quick Fit Glassware
« on: August 29, 2009, 09:59:02 AM »
GENTLEMEN!

I had a nice set of 19/22 but I have grown out of it the diameter is too narrow and as a result Im having troubles pulling oils over rarararara.....

And my Vac arm and Still head managed to implode last time I vac distilled 4-methoxyphenol, short path (ie no condencer)

Anyway I am about to get a nice set of 24/40 made up, blowen custom by a scientific glass maker not brand name or anything but its nice and thick and well made and priced very well....

Code: [Select]
This is my current order list:

1000ml 3neck flask  $61.50

500ml 3 neck  $52.50

Still Head/Distillation adaptor (with thermometerinlet) $25.50

Reflux Condenser West style $24.00

Lebic Condenser $24.00

VacuumAdaptor (105degdistillationarm) $26.50

Vigreux coulomb 300mm $24.50

Pressure equalized addition funnel $48.50

Associated keck clips etc. I will put some in with shipment

Thermometeradaptors for the 24/40 joints on the 3 necks  $12.50

Can you goodfellows recomend me anything else I may require I have 2 shoxlet's in 24/40 so I dont need a shoxlet, And I have a 1lt mantle, but im tossing up getting a 2lt vessle (I can just oil bath with my HP/MS)

Thinking of getting a dean-stark, and a shortpath condencer....

So can you think of anything else I could want may as well get it in one order so I can keep shipping costs lower! as it need to go international....

Also if anyone knows anywhere with better prices then that PM me, or if you want somthing from where im going PM me dont want to publicly post etc....

Cheers gents,

Sounds like you have abit of experience, but it is hard to remember, and know when on the spot etc.  So what about asking if the  Condenser  can get them to put indents, so you can fill em up(glass beads whatnot) and do fractional work, on top of the viegrux,(not literaly) also as a stand by, and indents shouldn't interfere if you use your condenser as a column to do chromo stuff..also a stright path ( short) vaccuum addaptor to do reflux, with vaccuum., and clayson adaptors have the added benefits of being able to add a few things,..You got a good sep flask,,If you consider it, I'd go for one, seeing how youve got an addition funnel sorted, one that has a glass tube say 4-5inch coming out the bottom,, pending on the size reaction you'd be generaly doing.. I like smaller flasks,, and semi micro, stuff, but the big stuff to clean stuff up with. Having traps for vacuum, with the side arm, and also used for flitering flasks.. a buchner type funnel.perhaps,, anyway, ive said alot, hope any of my thoughts have been of value

Just thought to mention, seeing how youve got one size, having adaptors between these sizes is going to be a bonus..and sometimes these adaptors work well  as you can use your 19/22 say 109deg vac adaptor, loaded on top of a column, filled with dryer.also it would increase your fractioning ablitly,.. Ive got adaptors for adaptors,, I forgot I ordered a bothway set, and ended up with excess, and very fucking helpful Id I do say myself.. ;D  It is good that youve bothered to ask, as I have remembered the times, of thinking,, GOD< i should of got that, I paid that postage, etc etc..

Yerh my 19/22 kit is very limited now...
Ive had it for 5 years now alot is broken etc..... so pretend i dont have it...

I have a few smaller flasks 100ml, 250ml in 24/40 so i wasent worried about that.. But I was considering getting a 500ml 1neck just to be abke to handel lots of solvent if needs be....

Also the clansen  is somthing to note... kinda embaricing I forgot it....

but yerh Ill order in the next week or so, so I want a nice complete list even if I dont use some stuff for 18months at least I have it when I need it....

Also I have good sep funnels as it is be it that they dont have ground glass joints  I have a 2000ml and a 500ml so thats taken care of....

I have vac traps and cold fongers from past endevors.... and as for vac/side arm flasks and bute funnels, as well as general glass.....

just looking for quickfit stuff at the moment that I would regret not getting

I would also recommend a large flask, 2, 3, or even 5 liters.  Get it with a 45/50 joint, and get the required adapter.  I also didn't notice if you had a clasien adapter or not, but I would recommend that.  The large flask is great for a lot of things - distilling a gallon of dichloromethane paint thinner all at once, large violent reactions, etc.  The 45/50 joint is also great for stuffing aluminum foil through, it makes it so easy.

Ok this is starting to come togther nicely!
I think I will also get a schlenk vessle, is some reactions that require an inert evnviroment to work..
Ill also get a clansen and price a dean stark app..

And doucher you have basicaly confirmed my plan to get a 2lt flask.. But im going to get my massive flask in 1 neck to save some dosh...

Is there any other funny bits that could be handy?

Septum stopper of some description. Just in case the other breaks - handy things.  Also one of those um,,bumper flasks,, only small and cheap, and good for vac.  and a straight path with sockets each end.  The last one I reckon warps the versatility angle big time..and can be 10 cm in length..or less etc.. shouldn't cost much.

I'd also recommend a couple lengths of glass tubing, unless you have those/can get those locally.  I buy 2 or 3 peices (each about 4ft long) usually, and within 3 months, there's only about a foot left.  I havn't been able to explain this yet, all I know is they must have been useful at some point if they're gone.  All kidding aside, glass tube has a multitude of uses.  Gas routing being the most obvious.

@2bfrank what do you mean by septum stopper? and Bumper flasks? are these flasks with some sort of anti-bumping feature.... And yerh I like the Idea of a short path condencer..

Also what is the best way to go about a schlenk vessel? is there some type of fitting i can get for a schlenk line for one of the necks on my 3 neck?

What I meant by a septum type stopper is litteraly a stopper that fits in whateer size neck for your flask etc, and it has a septum, a built in sheaf that one can inject various amounts of solutions in..Its handy. The anti bump flask, is as you say, designed to sit in the bottom flask and to stop surgers/frothing up, of what your working with, which can be predominant with vaccuum etc.. I also lucked out, and got a 3inch attatchment, 24/40 cone, and 24/40 socket, and it has indents,, so I can load it up with glass bits, and this is also good for bumping/surges.. and good for a few other things... I really recomend the indents on your condensers, too.

As far as the Schlenk vessel, I think their would be others in the forum able to give you better advise..I just got the basics, etc...

Got that from a web auction guy in person. He turned out being this shady russian guy on the docks. It was strange.  :).

I think that a soxhlet is great to have. It's the way to go if you're ever interested in any type of hash or salvia extraction. Mantles are also nice to have, at least for the small stuff (100ml and down). It's good to also have lots of beakers. I think they're the easiest type of glass to break.

Follow up I suppose.
The Attached Image is what I have ended up buying

I paid a bit for it all, but am happy it ended up around $700usd with postage, what I paid was half the Wilmad catalogue price so I still got off well, and I got that 5lt for a song!

I already have 2 soxhlet's in 24/40, the only thing I now need to buy is a pressure equalised addition funnel and a Dean stark (well a Barrett).

Thanks for the help guys!
