DIY LED Grow
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:09:40 AM »
Do-It-Yourself LED

You will need:
One to two LED Sticks/Circular mounts available at walmart or most any store for under six dollars.
A pot, coffee can, or something else to line with tin foil.
Dixie cups.
Another pot/coffee can/etc to use as the base.

Take the LED Sticks and make two holes in the top pot once you have lined it with tin-foil, place your LED sticks into these holes making sure they are secure. Turn them on to test the strength to see if it is bright enough with the reflective surface of the tin-foil.

Prepare your seeds in the dixie cup as you would normally, remember this isn't for taking plants beyond seedling. Place the dixie cup in the base you made, match up the top and base so they fit together.

You now have a DIY LED grow. Study up on light cycles for your plants and enjoy. I will post pictures as soon as my camera is in better shape.

Do you have any pictures of it on and do you know how many lumens the light produces? or do you have pictures of the plants grown in it? I am pretty interesting in making something similiar. :)

I can't give you a definite amount of lumens, unfortunately the plants grown in it were Marajuanilla and died from under watering after being removed from it, but they sprouted and grew fine when two of the led sticks were used.

Here is a link that is somewhat similar, http://www.thisgardenisillegal.com/2008/10/how-to-make-an-aerogarden-counter-top-garden-for-under-10.html .
I would suggest using her type of button LED as opposed to the stick kind I used.

ah nice link! Ever use this setup with a big CFL? I bet that would work pretty good. I know even with out reflectors or any of that stuff they seem to work pretty well for me.
Do LEDs compare to CFLs?

LED technology is pretty far off from being compared to CFL as of now, in 4 or so years they might catch up.
It's fun to toy around with though, did you check my addition to the book section? I have 3 pages so far but it's a bit broad.

Yeah, I think the CFL's would work a lot better then using LED lights. I've never really seen anyone how has been happy about using LEDs, I guess I need to read into it more but it doesn't seem they are very effective.

I have looked into LED Technology, and yea, as ^that guy said, its a long way off being useful for growing any particular herb you may enjoy growing indoors.

Your best bet is CFL technology, and you can get some great deals on a 250w compact CFL (brands called Ecolight).
But TBQFH Just get a 600w sodium and you're grand; its totally worth the expendiature.

Enjoy!

When you say  250w compact CFL, do you mean it is actually a 250W or an equivalent in the amount of light released? I have not seen ones with that much actually wattage but would be interested in finding a source for one.

They do make some pretty big cfl's these days, i seen one a few years ago that claimed to replace a 400w HPS (good fuckin' luck backing that claim up, lol) cant remember the actual wattage on that one. But a quick search turned up a 200 watt one http://www.1000bulbs.com/150-to-200-Watt-Compact-Fluorscent/33999/ for the price on this particular one at this particular site I would stick to HID all the way.
