Preparation of Lysergic Acid with Potassium Hydroxide Alone

Well guys...My days of extraction are over...I'm curious about the Preparation of LA.

Quote
5g of paspalic acid in 360 g of a 0.5N solution of KOH in a 50% aqueous ethanol is heated at reflux for 1 hour. After cooling, the pH of the reaction medium is brought to 5.5 by adding 1N HCl. The precipitate is filtered, washed with 3x20 ml 50% aqueous methanol, then dried in vacuo at 75°C. This gives 2.86 g of lysergic acid comprising 1% of isolysergic acid and the yield (w/w) is 49.8%.

Before this reaction is done, I wanted to get everyone's opinion on it. I did some research before even thinking about posting. I came up with two things.

1. Paspalic acid is hard as fuck to find anything on. No msds, no suppliers.
2. It seems like it would work. And the procedures after reflux are easy enough.

Here are the refs

US Pat. 6,242,603
Helvetica Chimica Acta, 64, 47, 478 (1981)
Helvetica Chimica Acta, 47, 115, 1052 (1964)

Have a go at it. I'm all ears.

It certainly works, but if you look at the dates of the references, this method is about as old as illegal acid manufacturing.  Paspalic acid will be quite a task to get ahold of.

Yeah I figured it sounded too good to be true.

I'll look into synth of paspalic acid. =\

Lol, paspalic acid is almost identical to lysergic acid, the only difference being the placement of a bond in one of the rings.  Synthesis of LA might be easier than PA, to be quite honest.
