Creepy computers!
« on: September 16, 2009, 04:43:38 AM »
Tired as fuck ..... can't sleep worth a damn.... and a final nail in the coffin..
God damn computer comes on all by its self. Now I need to sleep and am freaked out.

I do not like this.. Aside from some paranormal explination WTF would make it do this? the button is highly spring loaded and you MUST put it in for it to come on. Could a virus possibly have access to turning my shit on?Its been acting a bit tweeky latly. It sounds unlikely but alot has changed since my computer science days. Is there any place in windows that allows for a timed start up so that the comp comes on when you want it to?

Actually, I believe I remember a BIOS setting that can be armed to power a computer on at a desired time and date.  This was in maybe 1 or 2% of the computers I've worked on in the past though.  A low level virus like that, is quite a rarity, but they do exist as far as I know.  The issue is, the virus would have to be programmed into the CMOS chip, and you can't just "add" a virus to the CMOS chip, the whole thing has to be reflashed with the bug included.  Since the hard drives are not spinning, and the RAM dumps as soon as the comp is turned off, CMOS is the only possibility.

Now, for the more likely, less paranoia inducing possibility :)
On standard ATX power supplies (and all proceeding versions), the power on feature is controlled by a temporary completion of a circuit between two wires (usually smaller wires, green and black).  If a conductive piece of dust could have landed anywhere in there, that could initiate power on sequence.  Same with bugs, or even a well placed drop of condensation.

Before you go to sleep, turn the computer off, and bang on it a couple times.  If it is a conductive contaminant, this is a good way to dislodge it.  Unplug it completely from the internet, then go to bed.  If it turns on, a CMOS virus could be the issue.  If this is true, be very very very happy you unplugged it from the internet, because whoever put the virus on there desperately wants what's on your hard drive.

Well they cant have whats on my hard drive because you have to log in and thats stopping a full start up. CMOS sounds unlikely because I have had this computer for sometime with no problem.

See my computer is acting shitty after I DLed the new active X from facebook. This also installed a virus scanner update. What freaks me out is Facebook has been fouling up the past few days as well for everyone!!! ???. Im starting to think they have been hacked and implimenting something strange into peoples comps. Take care and be wary of them atlest until I can figure out whats going on.

There are so many rogue anti malware programs that there are websites online to inform potential victims:

It's not surprising you got infected at Facebook, social networking sites are prone to problems  ::)

Probably just Magic Lantern program (which logs your keystrokes and sends them to the Feds).

I'm just kidding.  I've found my computer on before when I know I turned it off.  In my case, I had once set the computer BIOS to power on following a power failure.  I wanted it to stay on while I was away for an extended period of time (had webcams, etc. monitoring while I was gone).  I never changed it back, so the first time there was a brief power glitch (even with the PC initially off), it powered on.

Maybe you have WoL enabled on the bios settings? (WoL, wake up-on-lan, the computer will start up when sent the right kind of packet)

Naaa I have a feeling its more sinister then all of this No1uno gave me an idea about it possibly being condensation and sadly I think hes right >:(.

I have been sleeping with my windows open and its cooling down rapidly around here with alot of moister in the air for the first time in a while. Now after shutting off the computer.. (Did it last night again) about 1 hour later it comes on possibly being from it shorting out. That means all hell is more then likely breaking out in the computer at the moment and I must open it soon to investigate.

Maybe put a humidifier by it and see if it turns on, and then keep it dry and see if it still turns on... be an interesting test IMO.

I wanted to make a firefox plugin where one can set the temp data, fav, bookmarks etc to be stored in different folders, and then incorperate this with a usb that is trucrypted and have a roming style interface set up, where a button is pressed to enable seedy mode (ie drug mode), a box pops up, slap the trucrypt password in and one is presented with a different profile, ie different history, bookmarks rarara, when seedy mode is disabled, goes back to normal resumes normal history normal bookmarks etc.......

But when I had to perform system recovery it reformated my hard drive, Wont that leave me with nothing not even any back up partions?

The first step of reformating is to wipe the slate clean before creating the new segments and I really doubt I have much hope of recovering any of the files that where once on it since its showing the amount of harddrive space used as only 4gb.

I still will go thru all your links and thanks for them Lugh and Wizard perhaps I can find something in there to help me get some of this back. Right now I don't even have internet explorer.exe how in the fuck I manage to get it to open when the exe is no where on my computer is beyond me. There is obviously hidden files somewhere that I am not seeing but Ill be damned if I know where this is.

Data recovery due to problems with Windows is very common, can you hook your hard disk up to another computer so your Master Boot Record isn't involved and disk swapping doesn't further corrupt your data ? Knoppix based CD's such as Ultimate Boot Disk allow one to access one's hard drive without booting up the operating system, and can fix other problems sometimes  ;)  It's critical to back up one's data, and having alll of one's files on the same partition as the operating system is a recipe for disaster  :( Some other freeware data recovery tools can be found at:
