Hello. I am an amateur ghetto-fab engineer
« on: September 20, 2009, 05:13:18 PM »
My life has always fallen prey to two great forces:
   1. the force of me being one broke $%#%^#%^#
   2. the force of my love for learning science and then uncovering the underlying, lego-riggable truth behind it all

Chemistry has been a most recent addition, following the physics/electronics/coding realm, but it's swallowing me up quick.  I am well aware that synthing my own hygeine, and cleaning supplies is only the tip of the empowering ice-burg.  Chemically aware thinking even on its own makes my brain tingle, too!

I was given this url as an invitiation, I have to admit you guys have made me look down in shame, I gotta a lot of catching up to do.

Keep your head up Iknowjt. No need for shame. I feel you will fit in nicely here.

Lets face it, you know as well as I do that making the equipment to perform a synthesis is half the fun of performing the synthesis... if not better ;D
There once were some bees and you took all there stuff!

Thanks for the warm welcome, bro.

However:
Oh no no, don't get me wrong!  The ghetto engineering is the last thing I would ever be ashamed of!  I only meant that I'm a bit behind on the systematic knowledge itself, without which creative home-engineering is nothing more than.....glitter and water colors......

Since that post I've read the wikipedia alkanes entry a few times over, and suddenly it's all seeming a bit less intimidating.  Looking forward to getting down and dirty with a big mess of hydrocarbon chains, maybe even some functional groups tacked on here and there to make things kinky:)

g'day matey, and welcome ;D,you're not alone on the "got a lotta catchin up to do" but the more variety the better+we can ALWAYS do with members who know stuff in other fields--i.e. i know that often i could do with help just on the software side of things--had some great help already,,but i'm sure you will be a valued member ;)

Hey man, Ive  been involved in this shit for more than a 15 years now,and I still cant construct a formula correctly.
Sure can construct some kick ass lab apparatus out of scrap and crap though.<- Half the fun I find.

You are not alone...

P.S dont feel intimidated, At the end of the day its all just nuts and bolts with fancy names anyway..

good vibes.  thanks to all.
So i finally got some glassware, and man I sure feel like i've earned it.  The fact that i've made a water jacketed condenser from glass tubing, an energy drink tube container, and have dremelled holes to fit it into a closed system with coke bottles, and so on, makes me appreciate the shining glory of the real thing, all the more.  And i really do understand the need for every bend in the shape, every milimeter of thickness, it feels like I was there when chemistry equipment was first developed.

It's kinda nice to set the old roll of electrical tape aside:)

heya iknowjt :)

ive always liked using copper for my creations. easy to make easy to plate.

its when it comes to the teflon gaskets for glass windows that things become tricky but still not to hard.

love the title getto-fab engineer truly I do love it.

I've always thought two, two holed stoppers at the ends of a PVC pipe made for a great condenser -- having the glass tube go into one hole at each and and then the other holes were attached to a water supply. Very cheap, works well.

currently disassembled

instead of a PVC pipe, it's the container for an energy drink

two holed stopper, good idea vesp

heya shroom 8 )

thanks, i wear it with pride...

yeah copper i still have yet to play with...
the advantage being it can be softened with relatively low heat, it is soft even without heat, and it can be soldered, correct?
(when comparing to any other metal pipe)
