A few friends came over and we were messing around with a pen, and then it hit me. A C4 pen. We discussed this for some length in time and came up with the fact that we;d need an electric detonation of the C4 in the pen, but it'd have to be timed also.

Heres the pen

So two questions...
1. Is making C4 possible? Or would another explosive be more suitable? (I've done no research in explosives) Though my friend mentioned using Ammonia Nitrate- Probable?
2. How would you have a timed detonation?

Search thru myth busters website as they went over this very topic sometime back and you might find some info on it there. The conclusion was all but a new super explosive(I dont even think they said the name of it) would need a massive size pen for effective critical explosion. I would say this is more Den of inquiry material Agent.

Explosions are highly likely but a kill shot so to speak isn't practical from what they found out. I was under the impression though that something that size filled with a material like Acetone peroxide could do some damage. Im not exactly a HE chemist either as I mostly focused on Phenyl ethylamine chemistry as I learned Organic chemistry.

PS: In order to give the HE section a boost try to research and present a very nice writeup of whatever with lots of references and pictures ect.... I like to see threeds started with much for thought. There is a reason I have my random experiment threed as I basicly outlined that to quarentine all the experiments of mine that where not well thought out or put together correctly.

I would love to start my own thread like that but it'd be nothing but thoughts, no experiments. I am too scared to try anything. I might eat the chemicals...

Same, and the random experiment threads serve the purpose of still donating info to the community, or.. whatever you want to call it. Possibly helping out or inspiring someone.

You really should do some hands on chemistry - at least document the LSA stuff, even if it is just a yucky extract. That would be welcomed here!

I wouldn't mind hearing you start a random chemical ingestion threed if thats what your good at

every now and then order something and give us an LD 50 so to speak of the chemicals. Just keep eating till you feel strange then mark your does. You could always start with NaCN and save a whole mess of problems down the line.

C4 is just plasticized RDX, which is made from hexamine and 100% white fuming nitric acid. So yes, C4 is very available. You'd need a cap though, so the pen could probably only hold no more than 5g. That's powerful enough deafen and shatter a hole in a table, floor, etc.. RDX is probably about powerful as it gets for home chemists.

An ammonium nitrate pen would be incapable of detonating due to size.

As for your electric ignition question, look into 555 timer circuits.

I'd try to look into furazan explosives. They look promising and a couple have their VoD above 10,000m/s

Why not? Its a matter of design then it is explosive power if all you want is for it to expload. Getting a decent explosion on the other hand would be no trivial thing with that size of material. A Piezo spark setup on the little clicky end of a pen seems like it would be a fun experment.

Absolutely.

Back when I did energetics I used pen casings as blasting cap housings all the time. I see no reason why one couldn't be modified to still operate as a pen and detonate electronically.
